The IITCOE recognises the context of the sector following from the rapid pace of technological change and the need to steer the developments in the telecom and related sectors to include all sections of the society, especially the rural, in India.

Areas of focus convergence, emergence of newer forms of media and communication, access and interconnect in a world of multiple players and technologies, seamless movement of users across regions and countries, entry barriers, network economies, valuation of networks, increasing usage of open and non-proprietary standards or shared innovative ways of regulation, market power in the context of spectrum allocation and mergers and acquisitions, subsidy allocation mechanisms, product differentiation and the emergence of distinct segments, product and service variety, financial, organizational, marketing, new product developments, customer use innovations, impact on other businesses, economy and life and relationships and comparative country studies.

While all these issues and concerns would outline the scope of the research, analysis and data acquisition efforts of the IITCOE, it would endeavor to carry out the its activities in keeping with the broad guidelines as defined by the Central Governing Council and the Board of the IITCOE from time to time.

Accordingly, the IITCOE.s efforts would be driven by the (i) interests of faculty in telecom and related sectors, (ii) the suggestion(s) of the Central Governing Council for the TCOEs, (iii) issues of regulation and policy and (iv) the customer interface which are all likely to be of much importance. Faculty members would also be free to initiate activities as per their choice and understanding of the current needs of the telecom sector and related areas with the support of the IITCOE.Below the core activities covering research, training and seminars / workshops are outlined.
